When I first saw Lick
and Lather by Janine Antoni I thought these were incredible sculpted bust made
of chocolate and soap, having no idea these were actually sculpted by licking
and washing, which explain the meaning behind the title. It does sound fun to
make when playing with large amounts of chocolate and soap but as she explained in the video I begin to understand the reason why she
did this. The purpose why these busts were created was to show her input about
her physical appearance, to show a love-hate relationship, and I can relate to
that. In the past I too had struggles on how I looked and wanted to
change it or erase it completely and start all over but later on in life I learned to accept it and to love who I am. I feel this piece shows that everyone has struggles on defining who they are and need a chance to explore themselves on found out who they truly are, we are human beings after all. We may not be perfect in our own eyes but to others around us, we are.
